The 8-step vegan and cruelty free skincare routine that you’ve been searching for.
Calling all dedicated followers of Veganuary, the cruelty free crusaders and everyone else looking to do their ‘bit’. The first month of 2021 is rolling to a close and it’s time to remember being morally conscious matters all year round. Just like a puppy is not just for Christmas, looking after our lovely planet is not just for January either. If you’ve already ditched your bathroom bottles and switched to shampoo bars, you’re half way there, but for the beauty junkies amongst us, there’s further work to be done. Albeit, not only on our part.
Talk vegan to me.
Ironically, the first rule of vegan beauty is to talk about vegan beauty! Ask questions and check labels. Whilst you may be led to believe an item is vegan – meaning by definition, the product does not contain any animal ingredients or by products – this does not by default automatically mean it’s cruelty free. It’s very possible that a product’s ingredients can be completely vegan, but it has been
either tested on animals in creation, production or even by a third-party company testing it on behalf of the brand. Unfortunately, in some cases this cannot be avoided. As recent as March 2019, only 40 countries worldwide had bans on animal testing for beauty products. The EU joined this pledge in 2013, but
due to the car-crash that is Brexit, the future for British laws on animal testing could potentially be murky. Thankfully, the government has confirmed it has no plans to revert back to allowing testing on animals, so we’re in the clear for now.
So, if you’ve made it this far and your skincare go-tos are due for a top up, here is an entire routine from start to finish including products that we can guarantee are both vegan and cruelty free. Period.
If you’re a fan of K beauty, this one’s for you. Excluding the Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask (which contains honey), Glow Recipe’s products are all vegan and 100% certified cruelty free. Cleansing balms are our favourites for melting away makeup, massaging pores and leaving your skin free of dirt but without stripping it of moisture, and this fruit salad of a balm is no exception.
This zesty fresh scrub is not only physically exfoliating, but also chemically exfoliative. Packed with AHAs to rid of dead skin cells, yet balanced with chamomile to sooth, this hybrid scrub is an ideal product to incorporate into your skincare routine once or twice a week for renewed skin every time.
Incorporating a facial mist/hydrating toner into your skincare routine is a must for those of us that have dry and dehydrated skin. Not only is Dermalogica a renowned brand, promoted by dermatologists worldwide, but this toner is certified cruelty free and vegan too – things we love to see. If you’re a little on the dry side or just fancy being that little bit extra spritzing your face, give this one a go and you won’t look back.
If you’re not familiar with the benefits Vitamin C can have on your skin and claim yourself to be a beauty geek, then simply you must have been living under a rock. A key ingredient for lifting dull complexions and brightening, this Allies of Skin serum is packed with Vit C goodness that will leave you glowing. If you’re on the younger side of 30 then this is a definite consideration to use morning or night to keep your skin hydrated and fresh. And again, a completely cruelty free brand, and this product specifically is vegan.
A brand worth checking out if you’re keen to invest in a company that values its sustainability and ethics very highly, Biossance is a market leader in creating ground-breaking products without sacrificing the health of our environment. This moisture cream aims to plump and hydrate skin that’s stuck in a rut, promising to leave you with a dewy finish.
An eye cream that does exactly what it says it does on the tin. Brightens and wakes up the most knackered of eye bags (we’ll have a box worth each). This four-part ingredient concoction consisting of Vitamin C, niacinamide, ginseng root extract and coffee seed extract is all the caffeine you need in the morning. Clean, cruelty free and vegan.
If we tell you that 80% of ageing is due to sun damage, nowww will you wear your SPF? If the idea fills you with ghastly flashbacks of your mum slathering you with factor 50, think again. This sunscreen is more like a serum, leaves no white cast (great for all skin tones) and is incredibly lightweight too. Glossier is cruelty free, and whilst all their products are sadly not vegan, this one most definitely is.
Much like its cult classic older sister, the Weleda Skin Food moisturiser, this lip balm is the reliable friend you need in your handbag, back pocket, glove box...the list really does go on. Made with natural oils and plant extracts, purchasing this nourishing lip balm is a no brainer.
