Stripped down - The Series
My name is Eve and i'm gonna strip right down to the bottom, and when I say bottom, I mean it. I'm here to tell you that you should LOVE your body like your body loves you.
We should all worship our bodies, right? Treat them like they treat us? Because isn't it our amazing body that gives us skin to protect ourselves, eyes to see the most beautiful things in life, and a heart which beats only to feel the most precious things that come close to us.
I guess it took me a while to realise that. I spent a long time punishing my own body for something that wasn't even my bodies fault. But hey, fighting with your own mind every single day can be exhausting...
I was 21 when I heard a doctor say the words to me "Your organs are going to fail and your heart could stop at any minute". Now, you'd think that would have been terrifying, but honestly, I was clueless and pretty oblivious to it all. I didn’t purposely want to end up like the picture on the left - I went through a bump in the road and before I could realise my mental health had taken control. It's true to say that no ones journey is perfect, and we all deal with trauma in our lives in different ways. Well, I was lucky enough to have the most amazing family and friends to talk to and help to pull me through his hard time.
Two years went on and I went back to uni to study to become a teacher (my dream job), just when I thought things couldn't get any better, I hit another bump in the road - everything myself, my friends and family had worked for to get me better, had gone out the window. I was back to step one, punishing my body for no fault of it's own. It took me a while to fix myself, but I noticed the signs early and listened to my friends and family. I knew that the best thing to do was to seek professional help, even if I thought it was the most stupid idea talking to a stranger about something I didn’t even understand myself, but man I’m glad I did. Stripping down, and opening up can be the most challenging but also the most healing practice.
Studying to become a teacher isn't easy, I have to say. So many early mornings and sleepless nights, on top of what my mind and body was going through on a personal level. Looking back at my journey, it's almost frightening to see visual evidence of the bad place I was in my life, but now, after many years, I know there is nothing to be ashamed or scared of when it comes to your mental health. Just because we can’t see it doesn’t mean it can’t be fixed and if you really want something you can fight and give every single piece of you to reach your goal no matter what you are going through. It's weird, you just kind of HAVE to find the strength within you that you didn't even no you had. I wouldn't have believed that if you had told me at my worst, but it's so true.
If someone would have told me two years ago that I would be a teacher for children with Special Educational Needs in an Ofsted Outstanding school, I wouldn't have believed them, but it's true, I really am. I survived the darkest place of my life so far, two times round, by TALKING. Opening up, facing my demons head on.
I am now 25 and have my dream job, the most amazing friends, family and boyfriend. I'm lucky enough to wake up every morning and be grateful to be here because of the strength I found from seeking help. If I hadn't of spoken up about my problems and began to look after my body, like it looks after me, I may not have been lucky enough to have had all of this.
Through my journey so far I have learn't that it really is ok to not be ok. We have to talk more, we need to know we are 100% not alone. Trust me, you CAN get better no matter what you're going through, but don’t go through it in silence, be brave and TALK MORE because ‘broken crayons still colour’ and you are WORTHY.
Just promise me one more thing, be kind to your body, take care of yourself, and always treat your body how it treats you.
