Ditch The Plastic: Sustainable Swaps For Plastic Free July.

Ready to join the plastic free revolution? We’re kicking off Plastic Free July with 6 easy plastic alternatives and sustainable swaps to help reduce single use plastic pollution. Sadly, plastic is pretty much everywhere, in our kitchens, bathrooms and even in the clothes we wear. World plastic pollution has increased exponentially from 2.1 million tonnes in 1950 to nearly 300 million tons annually and by 2050, there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish. It has never been so important to ditch the plastic, shake up throwaway culture and switch to sustainable alternatives.

Hands with reusable coffee cups against beach backdrop

I don't know about you, but it’s fair to say everyone here at nuddy has a serious love affair with coffee, and as a nation, the UK drinks about 95 million cups a day. Disposable coffee cups, whether paper or plastic, mostly end up in landfill with only one in 400 cups actually being recycled. Despite paper coffee cups seeming more sustainable than plastic, they too actually include a layer of polyethylene (which is plastic) and usually have a plastic lid, meaning they are more difficult to recycle. The UK’s love for takeaway coffee produces a disposal of 2.5 billion plastic-coated takeaway cups annually and this number is only set to increase. And with that, reusable coffee cups to the rescue!

Reusable coffee cups can keep your drinks warm or cold, support plastic free initiatives and reduce single use waste. The Circular & Co reusable coffee cups are the world's first 100% leak proof and 100% recyclable reusable coffee cups. They are made from single-use paper cups and designed with practicality and circularity in mind with 10 years use. The Circular & Co are a great example of a business tackling plastic waste and pioneering the Circular Design movement.

Say no to disposable plastic shopping bags! An easy sustainable swap can be swapping the disposable plastic bags for a cute reusable shopping bag. Disposable plastic bags are a huge problem for the environment and as consumers, we are polluting our planet with 5 trillion plastic shopping bags per year with fewer than 3% being recycled. Once a plastic bag has been made, used and disposed of, they can take up to 1,000 years to degrade in landfill and even when they do, they don't completely break down but instead photodegrade, becoming microplastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment and harm wildlife.

Supermarkets are taking initiatives to provide ‘bags for life’ which are great plastic bag alternatives but they’re often bulky and impractical. If you fancy a stylish, sustainable and practical shopping bag to accompany your supermarket trips, our favourites are the Kind Bag reusable bags. With a huge selection of sizes, colours and patterns, we are seriously spoilt for choice! These bags generate less Co2 than cotton bags, are made from 6 recycled plastic bottles and are 100% recyclable which helps to eliminate the need for single use plastic. Did I mention they're all super cute too?!

Another disposable product that is plaguing our planet? Plastic razors. Although plastic razors are not categorised as ‘single-use,’ they are highly limited by only providing 3 to 10 shaves before becoming blunt and clogged. Roughly 2 billion plastic razors and cartridges are thrown away each year and due to the mixed materials within a plastic razor, they can't be recycled. Swapping to a safety razor is not only kinder to the planet but is also kinder to your skin (and bank account).

Our nuddy Full Body Safety Razors are here to revolutionise shaving, with fewer blades meaning less friction when shaving, preventing itchy skin and razor burns, and the single double edged blades giving you a closer shave, leaving you with softer skin. Our razors are made to last so you only need to replace the blades, which you can get in our razor subscription here. No need to buy another razor in a couple months, therefore saving you money over time and saving the planet from more plastic. These razors are the prettiest bathroom accessory ever, are 100% plastic free and are super kind and gentle to your skin.

Hands holding deodrants

Single-use plastic stinks! Plastic use in the cosmetic industry is a major problem and 79% of people in the UK have purchased a deodorant as part of their weekly shopping, that's around 50 million people, all purchasing products with single use plastic. That is a lot of plastic waste! Swapping to a sustainable deodorant may be daunting because we all know what works for us but there are many sustainable deodorant brands out there that are backed by science, made with natural ingredients and provide serious protection from odour.

Wild is the first refillable deodorant brand in the UK. They have created a reusable deodorant applicator made from aluminium that will last a lifetime and can be refilled time and time again, eliminating the need for disposable deodorants. Everytime someone refills their case, they save 30 grams of plastic from going to landfill. Wild refills come in compostable bamboo pulp packaging and can decompose in as little as 6 months, cute and environmentally friendly!

Bamboo toothbrushes in glass jar

Planet or plastic? Within our daily routines is an opportunity to ditch the plastic and swap to a sustainable alternative. If we each use one plastic toothbrush every three months in the UK, we are disposing of approximately 200 million brushes each year and research has shown that it can take 400 years for a plastic toothbrush to begin to break down into micro plastics.

Bamboo toothbrushes are the future, they reduce waste, are eco-friendly and biodegradable - they compose in 6 months whereas plastic toothbrushes can sit in landfill for hundreds of years or end up in the oceans. Freshly Cosmetics Pure Freshness Bamboo Toothbrush is 100% recyclable, sustainable and antibacterial and doesn't compromise on performance and practicality.

Shampoo bottles? Thank you, next. At nuddy, we have been on a plastic free shampoo bar hype for a while now. No unnecessary waste, plastic free, natural ingredients, travel friendly, salon quality and lasts longer than liquid shampoo - they really tick all the boxes! In the UK alone, 520 million shampoo bottles are thrown away every year, shocking right? Hair and skincare bottles are often overlooked when discussing environmental impacts of consumer products due to them being mostly recyclable, however, this doesn't mean they are recycled. Shampoo bars are an amazing sustainable swap for liquid shampoo and our performance led bars are vegan friendly, suitable for all hair types and smell absolutely incredible.

Beginning your plastic free journey is one of the best things you can do for the planet; however, us as consumers are not the only ones to blame for the increasing plastic pollution. Big businesses must also be held accountable for their plastic waste and hopefully by changing our own habits and by shopping with sustainable businesses, we can show big businesses that we’re ditching the plastic and they should too!
