Sustainability is something that's super close to our hearts hear at nuddy. We are one of the only 100% plastic free brands in the beauty and personal care market. We're a mission brand. Our mission is to provide our community with plastic free bathroom essentials. You won't find any greenwashing here. We all know tackling sustainability issues is crucial to combatting the endless issues facing our planet right now, but why exactly?
More than 5 trillion pieces of plastic are currently floating in our oceans.
Did you know that plastic takes 1000 years to decompose? That means that every piece of plastic ever produced is STILL on earth today. Let that sink in. 40% of plastic created is used as packaging, which is a ridiculous waste considering this will inevitably be thrown into the bin - plus, 78% of all plastic eventually ends up in landfills or the environment. Terrifying, right?
Whilst we all know how plastic's discarded destinations end up polluting the planet, have you ever thought about the impact of producing it too? The process of making plastics releases both toxic chemicals and planet warming fuels like coal, gas and oil in the atmosphere. These greenhouse gases are released during every stage of plastic's life cycle- from it's creation to its transportation.
We are super proud to be 100% plastic free. The beauty industry produces over 120 BILLION units of plastic packaging every single year, which NEEDS to change. Our orders are packaged in biodegradable packaging, made from FSC certified cardboard and water-based inks that also happens to be cute as hell (yes, we are bragging). There is no room for plastic at nuddy and we want other brands to take the same steps to being plastic free.
Let's talk about our packaging. Not only is it absolutely adorable, it is 100% plastic free and recyclable (which we think should be the standard). The average UK household uses 216 plastic hair care bottles EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Now, if we think about what else we might have in our bathrooms- shower gels, scrubs, face washes, all made of plastic- then you can see how things start to add up. For example, in 2018, 5.5 million people were using disposable razors in the UK. These are incredibly hard to recycle, due to the fact they are made up of various materials. Our safety razors, however, are 100% brass and can last you a lifetime. By ditching the bottles for bars, you're saving both the planet and your purse- our shampoo bars last on average three times longer than bottled shampoo.
The beauty industry is sadly known for it's significant impact on animal welfare. Each year in the US, over 100 million animals are tortured in the name of product testing. Whilst cruelty free products are becoming more popular, there is still a long way to go in ensuring no products are created at the cost of animal lives. Plus, there are few brands that can claim they are vegan, due to the vast amount of animal byproduct found in skin care, makeup and hair products.
Not only is this totally gross, it is costing the planet, too. According to Carbon Brief, the meat industry accounts for 14.5% of carbon emissions- scary, right? We think that non-vegan skin, hair and beauty products are all to common- which is one of the reasons we are setting a precedent for change.
The way we see it, creating vegan products helps not only animals, but avoid contributing to problems produced from the creation of animal-derived ingredients. nuddy has always been, and will always be 100% vegan and cruelty free. We are passionate about leading the way in making this the NORM for all body and haircare brands. We ensure that all of our ingredients are sourced reliably, with the aim to create high quality products that don't need to have a negative impacts on animals in the process.
Rather than testing on animals, we opt to test any new products out on our babes (AKA employees, friends, family, the neighbours...) to ensure that they are working incredibly before bringing them to market. We are 100% against animal testing, which is why we opt for testing on our nuddy babes instead- lucky them!
Every day in the uk, more than 3 billion litres of drinking water is wasted. That's enough water to make 15 billion cups of tea.
Did you know that each UK household uses an average of 349 litres of water EVERY DAY? When you consider how much energy the process of pumping water requires, you'll start to realise the impact excessive water usage has on the planet. You may have considered how excessive amounts of water can be used during daily activities like showering, or using your washing machine, but what about the water in your favourite products?
Water is known to be the beauty industry's most in demand ingredient- so much so, there is concern that the demand for this resource could outstrip supply. Water features in everything from toners, to shampoos, to shower gels, to moisturisers- it's everywhere! What's even more frustrating is the fact that much of this isn't even necessary- most of it is used to water down products to reduce the efficiency of the product, which leads to consumers having to buy more!
We don't believe we should be adding to this issue by unnecessarily watering down shampoos and shower gels- and we certainly don't believe you should be buying something that you already have on tap (literally). Most bottled shampoo are watered down by a whopping 80%- our shampoo bars, on the other hand, contain all of the cleansing goodness, minus the excessive water. Through concentrating our formulas, we are able to give you more product for your money, whilst also helping you cut down on your water usage.
The same idea applies to our soap bars- switching to a solid body cleanser, rather than a regular watered down shower gel, allows you to:
-avoid wasting precious H20
-ensure your don't have to restock as regularly
-save your pennies in the long run
We've all heard about the issues of carbon emissions when it comes to climate change. Carbon dioxide makes up the largest percentage of all greenhouse gases that we emit as a planet. Whilst it is normal to have a small amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, the world now produces over 36 billion tonnes every year. In 2019, carbon dioxide accounted for 81% of total greenhouse gases produced in the UK. Whilst there are projects on track to reduce carbon emissions, we want to speed up the process by doing all we can as a small business to follow suit and set a good example for other businesses around us.
From 2022, we are aiming to completely offset our carbon emissions. This is process where we pay the experts to reduce or absorb the CO2 we emit as a business. This is done through a variety of ways- from planting trees to help landscapes recovering from deforestation, to investing in the production of clean, renewable energy, the idea is to compensate or 'make up' for the inevitable carbon emissions our brand produces.
You may not have considered the environmental impact of the ingredients in your favourite products, but, trust us, they matter. For example, microplastics are an invisible but deadly problem for the planet. Did you know that one shower with shower gel containing microplastics can results in 100,000 microbeads being sent into the ocean?
Alongside toxic, environmentally damaging ingredients like microplastics, there is also a huge issue in the beauty industry when it comes to many ingredients being unsustainably sourced. Often for convenience and expense, many brands use materials supplied by companies that exploit their employees through slave labour or brands that do not meet the criteria to ensure they are sourcing their ingredients responsibly and sustainably. Whilst sustainably sourced items can often be more expensive, we believe it should be an essential and integral aspect of all brands, to ensure they are transparency with their shoppers and to run their business in an ethical, responsible manner.
Our bars are free from plastic derived ingredients, which means they don't contribute to the clogging up of our oceans. They contain no silicone, no paraben and no phthalates. Not only are these ingredients damaging for your skin, they are also known for damaging coral reefs and having toxic effects on the environment.
We also take a stand when it comes to using sustainable ingredients. Our soap bars contain sustainably sourced raw African Shea butter and we are in regular contact with our UK based manufacturers to ensure all ethical practices are maintained. We also use palm oil that is 100% sustainably sourced to create our soap bars- a stance you can read about in more depth here.
We know that the beauty, skin and haircare industry is a huge contributor to many of the planet's problems. That's why we are determined to lead by example when it comes to being a sustainable brand. From the plastic that inundates packaging, to a lack of recyclability, to a shocking amount of water usage, change NEEDS to happen, and we are ready.
